In the scientific world, experimental research is used to determine the connection between two different types of variables. It is mostly used in scientific experiments, and it may apply to students, researchers, or even geographers depending on what they want to find out. Its main focus is to examine the common relationships between variables in everyday experiments and investigations. Considering its approach, it is recognized as a deductive research method, simply because researchers use it to approve or disprove different kinds of hypotheses put together by them while working with an experiment.

Terms and Expressions

People who use this method of research should be aware of the different terminology associated with it. It mainly revolves around four key terms that every researcher must be familiar with.

It all begins with independent and dependent variables; these are the causes and effects involved in the experiment. The independent variable, as the name suggests, is merely independent and is not affected by variables used in the experiment. Instead, it alternates or changes and it is controlled during the experiment. Subsequently, it is considered as the cause.

Next comes the dependent variable; this is the element that is measured and studied by the experimenter. It simply depends on the level of change caused by the independent variable. Hence, it is regarded as the effect.

Lastly, the research works with two different groups that include the experimental group and the control group. The former is the set of test subjects that are given the treatment. The latter remains constant, and it is worked in comparison with the experimental group towards the end of the experiment.

Benefits of Experimental Research

It is significant to work with new ideas and theories for many different and particular projects. By conducting this type of research, people can easily determine whether their ideas are effective and can serve various purposes. This is mainly because experimental research enables people to work in a regulated environment.

Researchers have control and a firm grip over the variables they are using to achieve different results. The results are also precise and straightforward. Researchers can also use this research involving similar theories and scenarios. Since researchers are required to determine the causes and effects of a hypothesis, they can also apply their results to examine more thorough and extensive ideas.

Furthermore, the research is not bound to just scientific research. Different types of industries can use it for their research needs without influencing the efficiency of the research. Lastly, experimental research is a great way to start for researchers because the workings and the results allow people to build newer ideas and investigate more.

Experimental Research and Geography

Most people relate experimental research to experiments used for scientific purposes. However, this type of research is also used to assist people in the geographic world. The way the research works in science is different from how it works in geography. This is mainly because the regulations do not apply to something like examining population growth or settlement options. However, geographers do use experimental research with their work in order to get reliable results. For example, they can determine different types of transports used in an area that is suited best for the type of environment. Although, geographers usually choose field research instead of other types. Moreover, in the geographic world, it is not easy for people to determine the physical attributes of a country or landscape to how it affects other variables.

The Drawbacks of Experimental Research

Before working with experimental research, researchers should also consider the disadvantages. This will allow them to determine the quality of results and to see if it is feasible for the project.

Considering many types of experiments, there is always a chance of miscalculations and human error. Since experimental research relies on variable control, there is a possibility that it might not be properly executed. Because of this, the overall results cannot always be reliable, and the experiment must be repeated several times.

This type of research needs a lot of time to be conducted, and it is a long process. Researchers spend most of their time examining and testing the effects associated with the experiment. It is also very costly compared to other types of research.

Applications of Experimental Research

As mentioned earlier, experimental research can be used in science and geography. It can also be used in a lot of other areas such as education and medicine. It is often used for predicting outcomes and drawing conclusions involving different situations.

Considering medical and pharmaceutical purposes, the research works with providing the best and effective treatment for various diseases. Researchers often take specimens of bacteria from the patient’s body that has been infected. The sample is then examined and treated with antibacterial substances. This is done instead of using the patient’s body as a subject matter. As far as the experiment is concerned, the changes and alterations observed by the researcher are accounted for and assessed to decide whether the research is effectual. The whole procedure can also take place using other methods of experimental research.

As students progress and get promoted to higher classes, the level of science becomes more complex. Due to this, students start to observe the applications of experimental research with their class assignments. However, science is not the only area where the use of this research is applied. The research can also be used in perfecting the quality and excellence of a school or any institute. This is usually done by evaluating student skills in relevance to various subjects. The research enables teachers to enhance their teaching techniques and implement strategies that help improve learning. The research is also used for human conduct and behavior. Researchers examine how humans react in different situations. Humans tend to act differently based on their level of comfort or the place they are in. Experimental research involving social behavior usually included scenarios in where people are placed in different environments to examine how their behavior changes according to place.
